Troop 874 Meeting Notes, June 5, 2008

Rafting Trip – The participants for the weekend rafting trip will meet at Glen Mar at 6:00 pm Friday (this evening) due to the length of the drive.  This weekend promises to be sunny and hot!  Don't forget to bring sun block and sunglasses (with a keeper sting).  The troop will return to Glen Mar on Sunday at 1:30 pm.

Planning Session – This Monday, June 9 June the troop will hold it semi-annual planning session.  Scouts will select activities for March – July 2009 including the 2009 summer camp.  All scouts currently holding leadership positions are expected to attend.  All other scouts are welcome to attend to mold the troop's direction and activities next year.  The meeting will be held at the Glen Mar Annex (where we hold PLCs) beginning at 7:00 pm.

Eagle Projects

Zack S's Eagle Project will be June 14 from 9:00 - 4:00. You will be working at Sarah's House (Ft Meade) to build a brick grill, replace benches and tables, and revitalize a garden. Sarah's House is located at 2015 20th St., Fort Meade, MD 20755. It is easy to get to and you do not need to go through any guarded checkpoints at the fort. Directions and more information are in the attached flier.

Gordon Serrao's Eagle Project – On June 28 Gordon will hold his Eagle project which involves landscaping and other activities at a home belonging to ARC of Howard County.  Stay tuned for more information.

Election Fever

June 12th will be a very special evening! We will hold elections for Order of the Arrow, which is recognized as Scouting's honor society. Approved as part of the Scouting program in 1934, the OA recognizes the Scouts who best exemplify the Scout Oath and Law in their daily lives, it develops and maintains camping traditions and spirit, it promotes Scout camping and it stresses cheerful service to others. To hold an election, we need at least 50% of the registered boys present. That means we need at least 55 scouts attending the meeting so, please attend the meeting on 12 June! You will learn about a part of Scouting that has been absent from the Troop's program for several years!

Meetings on Summer Camp

On 12 June there will be a meeting for parents about regular Troop 874 summer camp. It is especially important for the parents of the first year Scouts to attend.  This meeting will be held during the regular troop meeting.

On 12 June there will also be a meeting for all participants attending the Outer Banks Trip.  This is a mandatory meeting for scouts and parents.  This meeting will be held during the regular troop meeting.

KNOCK  KNOCK!

That is not the first line in a bad joke but the sound of Troop 874 knocking on YOUR door!  The troop is looking to elect a new Senior Patrol Leader during June.  Candidates would be advised to speak with previous Senior Patrol Leaders to get their opinions on the challenges and rewards of this premier leadership position in Troop 874.  They should also plan on meeting with Scoutmaster Kevin McGovern before they consider running for election.

Cub Scout Day Camp – The National Pike District will hold the annual Cub Scout Day Camp from June 23 – 27 at the Howard County Fair Grounds.  The camp is looking for Boy Scouts to serve as den chiefs and in many other positions.  See Mr. Will Land for more information.

The Eagle Court of Honor for B. Johnson will be at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 21st. It will be held at the National Cryptologic Museum and everyone is invited to attend. At 4:00 on the same day, everyone is invited to attend a cookout at the Johnson home. Directions to the museum are at http://www.nsa.gov/museum/museu00009.cfm. Directions to my house will be sent in a future email and will be handed out at the Court of Honor.

Sad Note - Troop 874 notes the passing of Mr Norm Weissert.  Norm was a long time member of the National Pike District Committee and a leader in scouting units in the National Pike.  Norm is the father of Dave Weissert, Broad Creek Ranger and strong supporter of Troop 874.
