Notes from Troop 874 for July 10, 2008

The Troop will depart for our regular summer camp held at Broad Creek Scout Reservation on this Sunday.  Scouts should report to the Long Gate Park and Ride at 10:45 am.  Scouts should wear their complete uniform (troop hat and neckerchief with slide) with their swim suit underneath.  Scouts may want to bring a bag lunch since there will be no food until the evening meal at 6:00 pm.  Scouts were reminded to bring a canteen or other water container for use during the week as it will be important to drink water to stay hydrated.  Adults are encouraged to bring along their "FRS" radios to maintain communications during the week.

Attached is information on summer camp.  It includes the checklist which is helpful for scouts attending camp for the first time.  It is good for old timers too!

The troop will return to the Long Gate Park and Ride on Saturday, July 19.

Directions to Long Gate Park and Ride:

- From Glen Mar, take Rt. 100 West to the first exit, 1A.  Follow signs to the Park and Ride.

- From Rt. 29, take Rt. 100 East to the first exit, 1A.  Follow signs to the Park and Ride.

OBX Crew

Members from the Outer Banks Crew (OBX) will depart from Howard High School on this Sunday at 7:00 am.  Scouts should bring a bag lunch.

Scoutmaster Kevin McGovern congratulated Brandon K. and Andreas M. for running for Senior Patrol Leader.  The valid election was held on Thursday and the successful candidate will be announced at the next scheduled informal meeting on July 24.

This was the last meeting at the Glen Mar Fellowship Hall (okay, we were outside!).  Our next meeting will be held in the parking lot of the new Glen Mar United Methodist Church at 4701 New Cut Road, Ellicott City.  After summer camp the troop holds informal meetings which are social events as much as scout meetings.  They also afford scouts with the opportunity to complete advancement requirements or merit badge requirements.  Scouts are encouraged to attend whether to advance or to be with their scouting friends and share evnets of the summer.

Troop 874 Scouts in the News

It was noted that there was an article in the Howard County Times on a recent Troop 874 Eagle Scout Project.  The article describes the project conducted by Mahesh S. at the Therapeutic Riding Center.

The Columbia Flyer also had an announcement about Second Lieutenant Ryan Losonskk being commissioned into the US Army.  Ryan is an Eagle Scout from Troop 874 where he and his father, Terry Losonsky,  were active for many, many years.

Mr. Bob Scarburgh has information on a potential Eagle Scout Project in Patapsco Valley State Park.  Maryland Department of Natural Resources officials have expressed an interest in having a Boy Scout create a disc golf course in a state park.  For more info contact Mr. Scarburgh.

All members of the Scouting Family should continue to have a safe summer.  Remember to Be Prepared and keep the spirit of scouting in your summer and your life!
