Meeting Notes from Troop 874, November 20, 2008 (Corrected)

Weekend Camping Trip - This weekend the Troop will conduct the Fall Roleplay.  It will be held at Broadcreek Scout Reservation (Camp Safron).  It will be combined with the traditional Thanksgiving Feast.  Scouts must meet in the Glen Mar parking lot at 6:00 pm Friday.  Return is scheduled for 2:00 pm on Sunday.

The WEATHER this weekend.  It will be COLD!!!  That should not come as news.  Remember the BSA motto:  Be Prepared.  Evening temperatures are forecasted to be 20 degrees (F).  Temperatures during the day may be no higher than 35-40 degrees (F).  That means scouts should dress warmly in layers.  Woolen and synthetic materials are best for warmth with cotton the worst material for keeping you warm.  A warm, heavy overcoat is good but dressing in layers is preferable so you can adjust according to your activity or level of exertion.  A knit hat (woolen or synthetic) and gloves are essential items.  Sturdy, heavy boots are also essential;  NO SNEAKERS OR ATHELETIC SHOES!!!   Bring your best/warmest sleeping bag with an additional blanket.  If necessary, pack an additional sleeping bag.  Remember to dress for SUCCESS!!!

December Patrol Leaders Council (PLC).  The regular PLC will be held on Monday, Dec 1 starting at 7:00 pm at Glen Mar.  All scout leaders are expect to attend.

Metric Marathon.  The Troop is again sponsoring a water station during the Metric Marathon on Sunday, Dec 7 from 9:00 a.m. until noon.  Over the past several years scouts from Troop 874 has staffed the station which is really appreciated by the event organizers.  Runners often comment on our scout spirit as they complete the final few miles of the event.  As in the past, several members of the troop will also run so come cheer them along.  See Bud Hunt for more information.  This event counts as an outing for advancement.

Supreme Sports Club-December Outing.  The Troop is once again sponsoring an event at the Supreme Sports Club!  This event promises to be a great activity with swimming, skating , basketball, racquetball and many other organized events.  The outing will be held on Saturday, Dec 13 and will conclude on Sunday morning, Dec 14.  Permission slips are due on Dec 4.  The cost is $9.00 for each attendee (scout or adult).  A permission slip is attached.  For more information see Mr. Mark Benz.

Skiing Trip in February 2009.  Permissions slips are available for individuals interested in skiing in February.  Initial payments are due shortly.  See Mr. Dave Eddy.

Den Chiefs Needed.  There is a critical need for Den Chiefs in local Cub Scout Packs.  Being a Den Chief is a great way to fulfill leadership requirements for rank advancement.  It is also a great way to influence Cub Scouts to join Troop 874.  See Mr. Will Land for more information.

National Boy Scout Jamboree.  There is a great opportunity to attend the BSA Jamboree in Fort A.P. Hill in July 2010.  This Jamboree will celebrate the 100th Anniversary of Scouting in the United States.  It will also be the last Jamboree at Fort A.P. Hill as scouting is seeking a new location.  Two scouts from Troop 874 have already signed up.  Scouts can speak with Daniel Hunt and Sam Kraft.  Scouts must be at least 12 years of age by July 1, 2010 and no older than 18 by August 4, 2010.  To register with the Baltimore Area contingent at:  www.MyScouting.org.  For additional information go to www.bsajamboree.org or contact Mr. Bud Hunt.
