Troop 874 Meeting Notes, March 26, 2009
Mulch Delivery. The mulch delivery will take place on Saturday, March 28. Scouts are requested to meet at the Glen Mar UMC at 8:00 am on Saturday. Assistance will be needed in unloading and delivering the mulch. Additional scout volunteers are needed as only 8 scouts have volunteered to assist in this task. E-mail the SPL at spl.troop8784@gmail.com to indicate if you can assist in the delivery.
Mulch orders that we made late or near the end of the ordering period may not be filled. Checks will be returned for orders that can not be filled. See attached letter for detail and list of idividuals who will not receive a mulch order.
Flag Ceremony. Troop 874 is looking for scouts (especially Korean and Asian scouts) to assist in a flag raising ceremony on Monday evening at a local Korean church. Contact Mr. Glen Lieu.
Wet Tents. At the last camping trip the troop discovered 20 tents had been stored wet after the November camping trip. While some tents were dried over the weekend many remain wet or damp. If you scout brought home a tent from the meeting this evening it is crucial that the tent be set up ASAP and left up until it is thoroughly dry. Some patrol boxes were also sent home with scouts. These patrol boxes and their contents must be washed. The contents can be placed in the dishwasher or washed by hand and dried before repacking. Dry tents and patrol boxes must be returned next week.
After each camping trip tents must be set up at home to be swept and dried. Patents are requested to remind their son of this responsibility. Replacement of wet/mildewed tents can be a very expensive lesson.
American Odyssey Relay. The American Odyssey team from Troop 874 will
sponsor a run on SUNDAY morning starting at 10:30. The run will leave from the
Friends of Scouting. Troop 874 continues its annual Friends of Scouting Campaign. This is the only BSA financial campaign to benefit the entire nation-wide scouting program. Troop 874 has long been a strong contributor to the Friends of Scouting Campaign. Bud Hunt is heading the campaign as in past years and he will make the FOS contribution form available at meetings. Families can contribute by check, credit card, pledge for future payment, or cash. See the attached form to make a contribution. The One Scout pledge of $140 entitles the contributor to the commemorative patch (A Scout is Clean) which is quickly becoming a collector’s item. To date 17 families from Troop 874 have contributed over $4000. What a significant contribution the FOS from those families! We hope other families will follow in their example and make a contribution to FOS. For more information contact Bud Hunt.
Information Worth Repeating
Scouting Fundamental for Adults: a.k.a Wagon Wheel. The National Pike District is sponsoring adults training for adult scouting leaders and parents new to boy scouting. The training covers major components of the scouting program including information for committee members, patrol coaches, and scoutmasters. It will take place over two days (April 18 and May 2) and one weekend (camping on May 8-10). Check out the brochure on the troop web site.
Adult Nametag Buttons. The troop provides name tag button to adults and scouts. It is important that new parents (and current scouts and adults) have nametags in place to ease the transition into the troop. You can e-mail Bud Hunt with your preferred name and position in the troop (committee member, patrol coach, president-for-life) or see me at the next meeting.
