Troop 874 Notes September 17, 2009

Popcorn sales – Mrs. Janet Novey spoke to the troop about the importance of BSA popcorn sales.  The National Pike District has suggested that each scout sell $200.  Prizes and other incentives are offered by the Boy Scouts and troops and councils benefit financially from the effort.  Mrs. Novey provided information on hosting “Show and Sell” events where it is possible to increase sales of popcorn.  For more information contact Mrs. Novey.  Popcorn sales at Troop 874 support the “Wish Upon a Star” program at Glen Mar UMC where gifts are purchased for distribution to needy families at the Christmas season.

Cycling Merit Badge – Mr. Dean Clark has two rides scheduled this weekend. The Saturday trip will begin at 3:00 pm from the Baltimore and Annapolis Trial, Glen Burnie for a distance of 25 miles.  The Sunday ride will begin at 7:00 am (yes, in the morning!!!) at the Baltimore and Annapolis Trail and will cover approximately 35 miles.  Contact Dean Clark for more information.

Patrol Boxes – The troop quartermasters will inspect and assemble patrol boxes on Sunday, September 20 at 3:00 pm in the Glen Mar UMC parking lot.  Patrols are expected to provide scouts to inspect and re-stock patrol boxes in preparation for the upcoming camping trip.  It is essential for program and patrol quartermaster to be present to assist.

2009 Summer’s End Jam – On Sunday, September 20 from 2-6 pm the local faith community in Elkridge will sponsor this program of fun, food, and festivities at the SuperFresh Parking Lot in Elkridge Corners.  This event features games, moon bounce, dunk tank, live music (O.R.B. and other local bands will perform) and many fun activities.  Crafters and local vendors will also participate.  The goal is to collect food and cash donations for the Elkridge Food Pantry with 100% of proceeds benefiting local families.  See the attached flyer.  For a list of performers and times go to:

Youth Protection Training – Will Land announced the future availability of Youth Protection training in October.  Will is soliciting potential dates for training in Troop 874 during the month of October.

Citizenship Merit Badges – Brennan Love is serving as counselor for these three merit badges.  See Brennan during regular meetings to sign up for these merit badges.

Note:  Brennan is one of several former scouts in Troop 874 who have returned to the troop as adults to enhance the troop program.  I don’t know if this is a trend in scouting but Brennan’s participation is greatly appreciated and it speaks to the impact of scouting in many lives.  Other former scouts who have been active in the troop recently include Ben Bryden, Chris Pund, Ted Budzichowski, Ryan Gauthier, and Hans Moeller.  The troop is enriched by their participation.

Sea Base Opportunity - One space remains available for a scout to attend the 2010 Sea Base Adventure from July 18-24, 2010.  See Mr Olson at the next meeting.  Sea Base is a great boy scout program of sailing and adventure in the Florida Keys.

Use of Glen Mar UMC spaces – To reduce wear and tear on the new church spaces Glen Mar UMC has requested that troop members stay out of church spaces that are carpeted.  Members of troop 874 are allowed to use the carpeted spaces that lead to the restrooms.
