Troop 874 Notes October 29, 2009

Congratulations to Troop 874’s newest Eagle Scout, Kai F..  Kai recently passed his Board of Review.

Congratulations also to Zach S. for earning his second Eagle Scout Palm (Gold).  Eagle Scouts can continue to advance by earning merit badges and by continuing to hold leadership positions in the Troop.

Planning for Eagle Scout Projects.  Mr. Bob Scarburgh clarified that with new District oversight of Eagle Scout projects scouts must allow for at least 5 weeks from time of submission to Mr. Scarburgh to final approval.  Scouts must adjust there schedule accordingly.  Note well that one constant remains known:  the number of days between a scout’s 17th birthday and 18th birthday!

Registration for Troop 874.  Parents must pickup their registration packet during the regular troop meeting.  The troop is requesting that registration be completed by the end of October.  Please make every effort to register on time.  If a family is not planning to re-register please notify the program assistant scoutmaster.

Seabase Opportunity.  Recent developments have resulted in new opening for two scouts and one adult in the Seabase program.  Seabase will run from July 17 – 24, 2010.  See Mr. Olson at the next meeting or contact him at 410-456-1417.  Sea Base is a great Boy Scout program of sailing and adventure in the Florida Keys.

Popcorn Results.  Thirty scouts from Troop 874 sold $6,600 in popcorn.  The Aflak Patrol in the Ranger program sold the most popcorn (average $1265 per scout) and will attend a free night at Earth Treks compliments of the Troop 874 Committee.  Congratulations to all scouts who sold popcorn.  Also special thanks to Mrs Karla Dwyer for taking on this initiative.

Thanksgiving Feast.  One of the main stays of the Thanksgiving Feast (in addition to Mom Springer’s good cooking!) is the deserts prepared by Scouts under the direction of Mr. Dan Goulette.  Each patrol needs to see Mr. Goulette to select a recipe and then be prepared to prepare the desert for the Feast.  Scouts are to provide $4.00 to Mr. Goulette from the $15 fee for the regular Feast.

Permission Slip for the Thanksgiving Feast is attached and must be returned to patrol leaders on Thursday, November 12.

CPR Classes for Adults.  The next CPR class (adult only, not child or infant) will be held on Wednesday, November 11th, 5 to 9 P.M.  Location is to be determined but will most likely be at Glen Mar UMC.  Cost is $30.00 per person.  Maximum number of 10 participants.  To register for this class, please send an e-mail to Stephanie Landry-Fida

American Odyssey Relay Race.  Bud Hunt announced that the Troop would again participate in the American Odyssey Relay Race.  This is a 200+ relay from Gettysburg, PA to Washington, DC scheduled for April 23/24, 2010.  A team can consist of up to 12 individuals (no fewer than 4 adults) who will run the entire relay race over two days.  Last year the troop fielded a team that completed the relay in 32 hours.  The cost is $100 per person.  The troop is anxious to field a team as the American Odyssey organizers are capping the total number of registrants.  If interested see Bud Hunt ASAP.  For more information see the article in the August Baltimore Area Scouter newsletter or go to the American Odyssey web site: http://www.americanodysseyrelay.com/

Memorial Service for Allan Anderson

Sadly, Allan Anderson, a friend and long-time member of the Troop 874 family passed away last Sunday afternoon. He was diagnosed in July 2008 with lung cancer, underwent treatment and returned to work at the Applied Physics Lab.  A few weeks ago he became sick once again, received treatment, but after the battle was lost he came home under hospice care a week ago Monday.  There will be a memorial service at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, November 1st at the First Lutheran Evangelical Church at 2:00 PM.  Candi would like to see the service as a celebration of Allan's life!  She suggests that family and friends NOT wear the traditional black clothing.  Light refreshments will be served after the service.  The church is at just off of Old Frederick Road, and directions to the church can be found at http://www.firstlutheranec.org/about/directions.html.   The address is 3604 Chatham Road, Ellicott City, MD  In lieu of flowers and due to the exceptional care given to Allan and his family, Candi requests that those inclined to do so, make a donation to either Howard County General Hospital Oncology Ward or The American Cancer Society, in memory of Allan. Allan, a non-smoker, would prefer donations to ACS be directed toward funding lung cancer research. On-line donations to the ACS can be made at https://www.cancer.org/aspx/Donation/DON_1_Donate_Online_Now.aspx?don_promo=WebMem.

Please remember the Anderson family in your prayers.
