Troop 874 Notes November 5, 2009

Registration for Troop 874.  Parents should have picked up their son’s registration packet during the regular troop meeting.  If you have not picked up the packet it will be mailed to your family.  The troop requests that families act on the registration immediately!  If a family is not planning to re-register please notify your program assistant scoutmaster.  Please assist Kent Morris, Troop Registrar, by completing re-registration if you have not already do so!

Personnel Fitness Merit Badge.  Mr. Glenn Lieu will hold a session on this merit badge beginning at 7:00 pm on Thursday, November 12.

Thanksgiving Feast.  One of the main stays of the Thanksgiving Feast (in addition to Mom Springer’s good cooking!) is the deserts prepared by Scouts under the direction of Mr. Dan Goulette.  Each patrol needs to see Mr. Goulette to select a recipe and prepare the desert for the Feast.  Scouts are to provide $4.00 to Mr. Goulette from the $15 fee for the regular Feast.  The $4 is due next Thursday, November 12.  The $11 cost for the Feast is also due to patrol leaders on November 12.  Patrols will also collect funds for the remaining food costs.

Fee for adults eating with Ken Springer (the leadership mess) is $20 and is due Thursday, November 12.  This covers ALL the fine food you will consume over the Thanksgiving weekend (including the Feast).

Permission Slip for the Thanksgiving Feast is attached and must be returned to patrol leaders on Thursday, November 12.

December Outing - Supreme Sports Club.  The Troop will hold its traditional December event on Friday evening, December 11 until Saturday morning, December 12 at the Supreme Sports Club.  The permission slip and the $4 fee are due on Thursday, November 19.  This is the one time each year that scouts are expected to stay up all night without fear of annoying their adult leaders!!!  See the attached permission slip.

Troop 874 reserves the right to cancel the event if sufficient participants do not sign up by December 3.  All checks will be returned if the troop cancels the event.

Seabase Opportunity.  Recent developments have resulted in new opening for two scouts and one adult in the Seabase program.  Seabase will run from July 17 – 24, 2010.  See Mr. Olson at the next meeting.  Sea Base is a great Boy Scout program of sailing and adventure in the Florida Keys.

Popcorn Results.  Congratulations to the top sellers of popcorn:  Luke N ($750) and Matt C. ($610).  Specials congratulations to the Aflac Patrol for winning the patrol contest for highest average popcorn sales per scout.  The Aflac patrol sold $1335 and was rewarded by the Troop 874 Committee with an evening at Earth Treks.

Now Scouts need to plan in retrieving their popcorn.  Please pick up your popcorn order on November 14 and 15 at the Dwyer home.

Ski Trip – See Mr. Dave Eddy for information on the February Ski Trip to West Virginia.  This is a fun weekend activity and a great opportunity to ski at a reduced rate.

American Odyssey Relay Race.  Bud Hunt announced that the Troop would again participate in the American Odyssey Relay Race.  This is a 200+ relay from Gettysburg, PA to Washington, DC scheduled for April 23/24, 2010.  A team can consist of up to 12 individuals (no fewer than 4 adults) who will run the entire relay race over two days.  Last year the troop fielded a team that completed the relay in 32 hours.  The cost is $100 per person.  The troop is anxious to field a team as the American Odyssey organizers are capping the total number of registrants.  If interested see Bud Hunt ASAP.  For more information see the article in the August Baltimore Area Scouter newsletter or go to the American Odyssey web site: http://www.americanodysseyrelay.com/

Information Worth Repeating

Planning for Eagle Scout Projects.  Mr. Bob Scarburgh clarified that with new District oversight of Eagle Scout projects scouts must allow for at least 5 weeks from time of submission to Mr. Scarburgh to final approval.  Scouts must adjust there schedule accordingly.

Note well that one constant remains known:  the number of days between a scout’s 17th birthday and 18th birthday!

Gift Cards - This program is sponsored by Glen Mar United Methodist Church and helps support the church and its ministry.  Gift cards are available for many businesses in Howard County.  See Mr. Dan Edwards.
