Troop 874 Notes November 12, 2009

Newest Eagle Scout:  Congratulations to Jonathan P. who recently complete his Eagle Scout Board of Review!  This is a great achievement on the part of Jonathan.

Future Eagle Scouts:  The Troop has many perspective Eagle Scouts on the horizon and many Eagle Scout projects in the works.  One such project is for Nick C. who is building shelves and painting for the North Laurel/Savage Multi-Service Center.  Nick is soliciting donations from troop members.  Checks can be made out to Troop 874 listing Nick C. Eagle Project in the notes section.  Nick will be looking for troo support when it comes time to build and paint.  Contact Nick at his e-mail.

Popcorn Results.  Congratulations to the scouts who sold popcorn for the Troop.  It was a great effort that earned funds for the Wish Upon a Star fund for Glen Mar UMC.  Scouts need to retrieve their popcorn on November 14 and 15 at the Dwyer home.  Come prepared to settle any outstanding costs.

Registration for Troop 874.  Parents should have picked up their son’s registration packet during the regular troop meeting.  If you have not picked up the packet it will be mailed to your family.  The troop requests that families act on the registration immediately!  If a family is not planning to re-register please notify your program assistant scoutmaster.  Please assist Kent Morris, Troop Registrar, by completing re-registration if you have not already do so!

Thanksgiving Feast.  One correction on the permission slips.  The Feast will be held at Broadcreek Scout Reservation not at Pine Grove State Park which was mistakenly listed on some permission slips.  In addition to a great feast the troop will also have a great program of Olympic proportion.  Come ready to have fun and eat!!!

December Outing - Supreme Sports Club.  The Troop will hold its traditional December event on Friday evening, December 11 until Saturday morning, December 12 at the Supreme Sports Club.  The permission slip and the $5 fee are due on Thursday, November 19.  This is the one time each year that scouts are expected to stay up all night without fear of annoying their adult leaders!!!  See the attached permission slip.

Troop 874 reserves the right to cancel the event if sufficient participants do not sign up by December 3.  All checks will be returned if the troop cancels the event.

Seabase Opportunity.  Recent developments have resulted in new opening for two scouts and one adult in the Seabase program.  Seabase will run from July 17 – 24, 2010.  See Mr. Olson at the next meeting.  Sea Base is a great Boy Scout program of sailing and adventure in the Florida Keys.

American Odyssey Relay Race.  Bud Hunt announced that the Troop would again participate in the American Odyssey Relay Race.  This is a 200+ relay from Gettysburg, PA to Washington, DC scheduled for April 23/24, 2010.  A team can consist of up to 12 individuals (no fewer than 4 adults) who will run the entire relay race over two days.  Last year the troop fielded a team that completed the relay in 32 hours.  The cost is $100 per person.  The troop is anxious to field a team as the American Odyssey organizers are capping the total number of registrants.  If interested see Bud Hunt ASAP.  For more information see the article in the August Baltimore Area Scouter newsletter or go to the American Odyssey web site: http://www.americanodysseyrelay.com/

Information Worth Repeating

Ski Trip – See Mr. Dave Eddy for information on the February Ski Trip to West Virginia.  This is a fun weekend activity and a great opportunity to ski at a reduced rate.

Planning for Eagle Scout Projects.  Mr. Bob Scarburgh clarified that with new District oversight of Eagle Scout projects scouts must allow for at least 5 weeks from time of submission to Mr. Scarburgh to final approval.  Scouts must adjust there schedule accordingly.

Gift Cards - This program is sponsored by Glen Mar United Methodist Church and helps support the church and its ministry.  Gift cards are available for many businesses in Howard County.  See Mr. Dan Edwards.
