Troop 874 Notes November 19, 2009

No Troop meeting on Thursday, December 3.  Meetings resume on Thursday, December 10.

The regular monthly Patrol Leaders Council meeting will be held on Monday, December 7 at 7:00 pm, Glen Mar UMC.

Metric Marathon:  The troop has again volunteered to staff a water station during the Metric Marathon.  This is a great opportunity for scouts to earn service time and Pioneer Scouts are especially welcome!  Two years ago at least one scout from Troop 874 ran the event.  The Metric Marathon takes place on Sunday, December 6.  The water station will be at 6144 Gate Sill, Columbia near Jeffers Hill Elementary School from 8:30 am until about 11:30 am.  Food and drinks will be provided.  Contact Bud Hunt to let him know you will attend.  Scouts are strongly encouraged to wear their uniform.

Newest Eagle Scout:  Congratulations to David E. who recently complete his Eagle Scout Board of Review!  David is a student at UMBC but we hope he will visit the troop during the winter break.  This is a great achievement for David and his family.

Future Eagle Scouts:  The Troop has many perspective Eagle Scouts on the horizon and many Eagle Scout projects in the works.  One such project is for Nick C. who is building shelves and painting for the North Laurel/Savage Multi-Service Center.  Nick is soliciting donations from troop members.  Checks can be made out to Troop 874 listing Nick C. Eagle Project in the notes section.  Nick will be looking for troop support when it comes time to build and paint.  Contact Nick at his e-mail.

Registration for Troop 874.  Parents should have picked up their son’s registration packet during the regular troop meeting.  If you have not picked up the packet it will be mailed to your family.  The troop requests that families act on the registration immediately!  If a family is not planning to re-register please notify your program assistant scoutmaster.  Please assist Kent Morris, Troop Registrar, by completing re-registration if you have not already do so!

Ski Trip – See Mr. Dave Eddy for information on the February 19-21 ski trip to Timberline in West Virginia.  This is a fun weekend activity and a great opportunity to ski at a reduced rate.  See the attached permission slip.

Seabase Opportunity.  Recent developments have resulted in a new opening for two scouts and one adult in the Seabase program.  Seabase will run from July 17 – 24, 2010.  See Mr. Olson at the next meeting.  Sea Base is a great Boy Scout program of sailing and adventure in the Florida Keys.

American Odyssey Relay Race.  Bud Hunt announced that the Troop would again participate in the American Odyssey Relay Race.  This is a 200+ relay from Gettysburg, PA to Washington, DC scheduled for April 23/24, 2010.  A team can consist of up to 12 individuals (no fewer than 4 adults) who will run the entire relay race over two days.  Last year the troop fielded a team that completed the relay in 32 hours.  The cost is $100 per person.  The troop is anxious to field a team as the American Odyssey organizers are capping the total number of registrants.  Registrants after Jan 1 face an additional fee.  If interested see Bud Hunt ASAP.  For more information see the article in the August Baltimore Area Scouter newsletter or go to the American Odyssey web site: http://www.americanodysseyrelay.com/

Information worth repeating

Planning for Eagle Scout Projects.  Mr. Bob Scarburgh clarified that with new District oversight of Eagle Scout projects scouts must allow for at least 5 weeks from time of submission to Mr. Scarburgh to final approval.  Scouts must adjust there schedule accordingly.

Gift Cards - This program is sponsored by Glen Mar United Methodist Church and helps support the church and its ministry.  Gift cards are available for many businesses in Howard County.  See Mr. Dan Edwards.
